Each month we make over an existing or tired piece and give it new life. New Again is an ongoing series shared by some of my best, most talented blogging friends. (This bookshelf is actually the Expedite which was replaced with the Kallax several years ago.) Now that this is complete we have a french door to trim and paint, then this room will be basically finished. My next New Again project, is simple way to add sliding doors to an existing bookshelf or IKEA Kallax. The doors made the project cost more than we were planning but I am really happy with them, and all that I can hide behind them. The total project cost $696, a fraction of the cost of a custom built-in or even a closet company we had bid us. We used the same cabinet latches here that we used on our DIY built-in desk. They were really easy to mount and operate. If we every do end up adding the library ladder, I would probably mount them higher. I got these battery operated library lights to dress up the large trim on top. ![]() Our built-in Billy Bookshelf hack wasn’t half bad! b Details that make it look more custom. Once everything was caulked and painted, I was really pleased with the outcome. We added baseboard trim to the bottom of the shelving unit that matched the rest of the room. After that we added a large crown to the top tacking it into the ceiling and the wood board. We could have used a thin plywood, or MDF but I was hoping to add a library ladder eventually and needed it to have some strength to it. We nailed a primed pine board to the frame. The empty space above the bookshelves was too short to utilize it so we framed it similar to the way we framed the bottom. I purchased some wood lattice trim wood and glued it on with liquid nails, then tacked in with our brad nailer. We could have left it like that but again, to make it look built in we needed to cover the seams. Once the bookshelf was built we set it on top of the 2×4 frame and secured it to the wall.Įach unit was placed flush with the other and screwed together. These were attached the wall for stability. We raised the shelves up by building a small 2×4 frame. The bottom of the bookshelves would have sat flush to the floor, leaving no room for any trim. ![]() So first things first, we purchased these bookcases but really you could use any bookshelf. I wanted the shelves to look built-in so we resolved that issue by adding crown. We purchased the 80″ tall shelves because the 96″ would have been 3 inches too tall. Had I decided to do them from the get-go I would have allowed for more space in the corner, so that I could put the doors on all the shelves. The doors on the bottom were an afterthought. Our IKEA Built-in Billy Bookcase hack turned out really nice and was just what we needed. We were going back and forth with the ideas of hiring a carpenter for custom built-ins, building them ourselves or doing some sort of IKEA hack. ![]() I was hoping to use baskets to store wrapping paper, sewing and crafting items, board games and more. I knew in the new house we needed a place for them, along with other miscellaneous items I had to store. Our love of reading has led to a pretty good collection of books. ![]()
